Runway to Sustainability

Target Audience: Ages 12-18

Coastal communities around the world share the most risk from climate change.  For coastal communities of color, this risk has already become real.  This engaging, hands-on course explores climate change, social justice, sustainability, and their interrelationship through a dynamic afterschool/summer program using apparel, one of the most powerful social drivers and status symbols for children/adolescents as a vehicle.  Students will join Angel City FC star Jasmyne (Jas) Spencer to lead a pivot that turns clothes into a force for good.

Learn how clothes are made, meet the people who make them, understand the social and environmental impacts of our clothes, and how we can transform them to become a critical part of the #ClimateComeback. Students then use this knowledge to extend the life of unworn clothes by participating in a clothing swap and creating their own Susty Game Day Fits in a Susty Fashion Workshop.  The program will conclude with students sharing their Fits with Jas and Angel City FC on the Runway at an Angel City FC match.

Teacher’s Guide, lesson plans, and associated resources, are all available digitally and specifically designed to be offered by existing staff. Lesson plans include an overview, learning outcomes, skills, resources, required preparation, activities, and vocabulary.
